FAQ

Why do you promote the use of British flowers?

Not only do British flowers usually have a better scent than imported ones, but they also have more character and movement in comparison to straight stemmed mass produced imported flowers, resulting in more interesting and unique designs.

They are also usually fresher and last longer as they travel minimum distance which should result in maximum vase life. British grown are excellent value for money. When they are at their seasonal high, quality goes up and price comes down.

Why do you try not use imported flowers?

Imported flowers have a significant carbon footprint as many are shipped from the country of their origin to Holland before being shipped again to a further country to fulfil an order.

The transport of them alone incurs significant levels of air miles and refrigeration both of which negatively impact on the environment, this excludes the impact of the amount of plastic used in their packaging and chemicals used in conditioning.

Why do you not use floral foam (Oasis)?

Unfortunately, floral foam contains the same amount of plastic as 10 plastic shopping bags, is non-biodegradable, non-recyclable and toxic for both humans and animals.

It is such an issue that the RHS has banned the water-absorbing block from all of its garden and horticultural shows that take place, and a strong nofloralfoam# movement started in 2017 to raise awareness of the environmental issues concerned with it.

Is the florist industry an eco conscious one?

Today the flower industry contributes to mountains of landfill, uses toxic chemicals and produces tonnes of carbon emissions.

However in addition to the nofloralform# movement there is a strong force from some of the most influential florists to try and change this wider issue by 2030 at the latest, and I feel that it is so important to all try and play our part in making that happen!
